The Week in EYC - 5/2 & 5/4

Hello Family,

There will be EYC this Sunday. The format will be a little different. Instead of meeting Sunday night, the youth group will be meeting at Gravatt for worship and a picnic. I will make sure there will be lots of outside games and balls/frisbees brought along. Also, if you need a ride to Gravatt, I will be driving the bus that way on Sunday morning. Email me or call for more details.

That being said, we will be meeting at 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 2, 2013, in the dining room of St. John’s to pack meals for the Hand Middle School backpack program.
Also, this Saturday at 8:30 am we will be meeting in the St. John's parking lot to volunteer at Harvest Hope until 1 pm (or sooner if we run out of things to pack before then).  Note: All EYC age youth can go to Harvest Hope this time!

I hope you can make it!

Home Works - Augusta, GA

I would just like to let you know that rising 6th graders (current 5th) can go to our Jr. High Mission trip to Augusta, Ga, from June 7 - June 11.  The cost has been changed to $80 (we have funds that can help you out if you need a partial scholarship!).  St. John’s has 20 spots, 3 are filled for sure at the moment.  We also still need chaperones.  The deadline to apply is May 20, 2013 - Paid in Full.  After this date, no more people will be allowed to go.  I really hope you can attend, it will be a great time of doing the Mission of the Gospel, building bonds and bridges, and just plain fun!

Please, email me or call if you would like to go, and will send you the documentation you need to apply.  Also, please tell me if you need help with the cost.

A message for 4th and 5th grade - Frankie's Fun Park - 4/28

Hello St. John’s Family,
I hope this email finds you well.  I have called all parents of St. J’s 4th and 5th graders to let you know that we will be going to Frankie’s Fun Park this Sunday, 4/28/13, from 4pm to 7 pm.  Please, let me know by Wednesday if you would like your youth to go (stjohnscolumbia@gmail.com, 610-509-9146, or 803-799-4767).  That being said, we will be needing volunteers.  Safe Church protocol states that for every 5 youth of a certain gender, we need a chaperone of that gender.  There is a lot of 4th and 5th graders, which is great! But that means we will need a lot of chaperones as well.

Besides the above, what do you need to know:

We will be meeting at St. John’s, in the parking lot, starting at 3:45 pm.  We will load up the bus and drive to Frankie’s at 4 pm (If you can’t make it to St. John’s, please contact me so I know you’re going to meet me at Frankie’s).

We will be getting game cards which allow the youth to partake in 4 events (Go-Karts, Bumper Boats, Mini Golf, Drop Zone, Fun Slide, or Laser Tag).  These cards will also give them $2.50 in arcade money.

You will need to supply your youth with money to eat, and if they want to do more than 4  activities, or play in the arcade.  I recommend between 30 and 40 dollars.

Please, have your youth dress in appropriate ‘fun’ clothing.  They will be riding go-karts, and running around, they might even be using the bumper boats (which are extra).  So dress accordingly.

At 6:45 pm we will round up the youth and load them back on the St. J’s Bus, we should be home around 7 pm.

Thanks!

Home Works EYC! 4/21

Hello Family,

The Yard Sale was very “Super” and “Intergalactic” - We raised $2065 toward Youth Trips!  Special thanks to everyone who helped! Especially, Ann Ruderman, Carol Fowels, Sidney Watt, Martha Stroup, Rodger Stroup, David Lewis, Gordon Schell, Eileen Schell, Sara Sterne, Charlie Sterne, Lockey Powers, and Jim Olsen!

Just a Reminder of upcoming events:

4/21: We will be having a Home Works EYC - combined from 5 - 6, dinner from 6 - 6:30 pm.  We will be discussing the importance of nails.

4/26 - 4/28: I will be at Camp Gravatt for New Beginnings.  There will be no EYC, after speaking to Fr. Joseph Smith, we decided there was so much to do to be ready for Bishop Waldo’s visit to St. Christopher’s that it wouldn't be wise to have a Blitz that weekend.  We will be rescheduling the Spartanburg Home Works Blitz for another weekend.

**A Note on New Beginnings:  If you still want to attend and you are a 6th - 8th graders, please tell me.  You will no longer be able to receive a shirt, but you should be able to attend!

Tomorrow's Lock-In! 4/12/13

Hello All,
Here is the final reminder of the St. J’s Lock-In happening this Friday (tomorrow) starting at 7 pm.  The event will conclude with the Intergalactic Yard Sale and we should be packing up around 12 pm.  We still need items for the Yard Sale, and volunteers for Friday and Saturday!

Can my Youth still come?
Yes, the more the merrier.  Please, do your best to at least give me notice tonight or tomorrow, though.  Please call the office (799.4767) or my cell phone (610.509.9146).

Will the boys and the girls be sleeping in the same room?
If your child goes to sleep (And I hope at some point they do tire out), that is a resounding NO.

Do they have to stay for the Yard Sale?
I would prefer if they did.  The Lock-In technically ends at 6:45 am, but we need all the help we can get for the Yard Sale.

What is the Lock-In all about?
We will be having fun games based on the 30 hour Famine.  There will be other ice breakers, a Nerf Gun War, and the Youth will also work to help organize and price items at for the Yard Sale.

I understand the event is the 30 hour Famine, can my child eat?
We will be altering the Famine this year to allow kids to eat.  I understand this doesn’t make it a true famine, but I also don’t want any of our Youth to get ill because of lack of food.  The meals will be for the most part based around the Famine idea.

Will my child have a chance to shower?
No, we do not have showers at our campus.  You’re child may shower when they get home after the Yard Sale (Well, that’s not my business - they can shower whenever they want, just not during the Lock-In or Yard Sale).

Can I still volunteer?
YES! I encourage you to do so!  We still need tons of help!  Please, Please, Please - this is me groveling.

Do you still need donations for the Yard Sale?
Yes, St. John’s Yard Sales have been known for a long time as the best yard sales in Columbia.  We are a little thin this year, and donations would be appreciate!  We want to keep our reputation so that our kids can continue to do awesome things at Youth Group and Mission Trips!

What do we need for the Lock-In?
 You should bring:
  • A change of clothing (You’re child may get wet during or after some of our activities.  Also, we will be moving around and getting sweaty and dirty - dress accordingly)
  • A hooded sweat shirt (We may be outside for some of our activities - No need to catch cold)
  • Appropriate sleep wear (I suggest sweat pants and a large T-shirt).
  • a sleeping bag, air mattress, pillows, etc. (We have these things, but some are dry rotted, and others stink).
  • A comforter or sheet to cover with
  • If they have glasses or contacts, bring the things they need to take care of their eyes
  • A toothbrush and toothpaste (No one likes cavities, and no one likes stinky breath)

Benefit Dinner at St. John's for GlobeMed - 4/6/13

Serving Global Health: A Benefit Dinner for ARM
Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 6:30 PM
St. John’s Episcopal Church
2827 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC 29205

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are a new chapter of a national non-profit organization at the University of South Carolina.  The first of our kind on our campus, GlobeMed at USC gives its members the opportunity to impact global health at the undergraduate level. Our majors range from accounting to pharmacy, and we believe that global health is everyone’s business. We are partnered with Alternative for Rural Movement (ARM), a grassroots organization in Orissa, India, for whom we are raising $2797 this year. This money will allow them to provide eight latrines to combat water and sanitation-related illnesses, a baby warmer for critical condition babies, and a stand light for the maternal delivery ward.  We will gain experience and leadership skills through our collaboration with ARM to help build its capacity as an NGO, our work raising interest in global health across campus. This practical knowledge will be invaluable when we move on to developing our own initiative in the local community, the nation, and the world. We hope that you will help us in our aim of creating leaders in global health.

To meet our financial goals, we have been creating and implementing several fundraising campaigns throughout the academic year.  In our first campaign, we designed and sold t-shirts, an effort that earned us a little more than $1200 that will go directly to our partner. We are currently planning a benefit dinner to raise awareness for our partner ARM and about global health in general. Tickets are being sold for $3.00 and every cent you donate is going directly to our partner. Local restaurants are providing donations of food for the event, and the venue was provided by St. John’s Episcopal Church at a very low price. The remaining cost of the venue was covered by separate donations. It is our policy to fund all of our projects solely from the generosity of outside donors so that all revenue from each campaign may be transferred directly to our partner and project. If you feel that this investment in global health and future leadership is worth more than a $3.00 ticket, or if you would be willing to make a donation to GlobeMed at USC, we would welcome your generosity as would ARM. The project we are undertaking with ARM is incredibly tangible and will provide real, measurable benefits to their community.  While our stated goal is $2797, we would love to be able to make a greater financial impact on their community if possible.

We need and appreciate your help to succeed in meeting our fundraising goals.  Our entire executive board and staff are passionate about global health, which includes local health.  If we succeed our first year, we will apply our newly developed skills to serve within the community the following years to come.  We hope that you too are passionate about global and local health, as it impacts people in such personal ways.  This is why we are inviting you to come to our dinner and support this cause.

Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have further questions, you may contact us by phone or e-mail at SouthCarolina@globemed.org. Checks can be made payable to “GlobeMed USC”.

Sincerely,

Sarah Law
